If you're in Austria in May, chances are you'll see a tall tree trunk standing near the center of a city or town. This tall tree trunk is called Maibaum in German, or May Tree ( or Maypole ) in English. It was raised around 1st May.

The raising of a May tree on 30 April or 1st May is an old tradition celebrated in many parts of Europe. It is also a popular tradition in Austria.

A May Tree is a tall tree, usually made of a coniferous trunk and decorated with colorful ribbons, wreaths or shields. It is erected on 1st May or 30 April and then remains standing for the entire month.

It is said that this tradition has its origins in the Middle Age The raising of a May Tree symbolizes spring and the new life that was now returning to nature. Today it stands for the community and the connectedness of people. The raising of the tree is often a community event where young and old come together to celebrate.

I was fortunate enough to witness and record the whole event of a May Tree raising event with my smartphone on 30 April, 2024 in this beautiful village in Austria.
