A new AARP poll reveals a tight race between Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) and former Governor Larry Hogan (R) in the Maryland Senate contest, with both candidates tied at 46% support. Despite Maryland’s strong liberal lean, Hogan, a popular two-term governor, has maintained competitiveness due to significant support from independents and even some Democrats. He leads among voters 50 and older, while Alsobrooks has an edge with younger voters.

Hogan’s appeal to a broader electorate stems from his moderate stance, distancing himself from former President Trump and emphasizing his independence in campaign ads. This strategy has allowed him to attract a quarter of Democratic respondents, though he faces criticism from Democrats who argue that he could contribute to a potential Republican Senate majority. Hogan's net favorability rating stands at 31 points, slightly higher than Alsobrooks' 25 points, although he has a weaker favorability among undecided voters.

Alsobrooks, who has consistently led in earlier polls, is now facing a tougher challenge as the race tightens. The AARP poll indicates that older voters, a key demographic, could play a decisive role in the election, especially given their higher likelihood of voting. While Alsobrooks leads among younger voters, Hogan’s strong performance among independents and older voters has made this race much more competitive than initially anticipated.
