Yaganti Uma Maheswara Swamy Temple – History & Significance

Sri Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple is located in Yaganti village, in Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is nestled in the Nallamala forested hills, about 100 km from Kurnool, and roughly 14 km west of Banaganapalle on the Banaganapalle-Peapully road.
The temple is generally attributed to King Harihara and Bukka Raya (Sangama Dynasty) of the Vijayanagara Empire (15th century).
There are claims of influence/contributions from earlier dynasties — Pallavas, Chalukyas, Cholas — especially in the region, though concrete archaeological evidence for all of these is mixed.
According to local legend, Sage Agastya wanted initially to build a temple to Lord Venkateswara here. However, when the sculpted idol had a broken toenail, he was saddened. He then did penance for Shiva. Shiva appeared and told him the place was more suited to Shiva (partly because it resembles Mount Kailash), and granted Agastya’s request to have Shiva and Parvati together as Uma Maheswara in one single stone.
The main deity is Uma Maheswara, i.e. Shiva united with Parvati, as a single stone idol — a somewhat rare form where Shiva is worshipped in this combined form rather than only as a Shiva Linga.
Built in Vijayanagara style, but with influences that suggest earlier stylistic contributions in the region. The craftsmanship (stone carving, sculpture) shows the work of skilled sthapathis (architects/sculptors).
Pushkarini (Temple Tank) – fed by water that flows through the mouth of a Nandi (stone bull) carving from the hill. The water is fresh, sweet, and remains throughout the year — devotees take a holy bath in it.

Yaganti serves not just as a place of worship but also a site of mystery, architectural beauty and spiritual legends.

It exemplifies how religious belief, folklore, and natural phenomena intertwine — e.g. the legend of the growing Nandi, the Pushkarini that is always full, combined with historic temple building traditions.

The temple is also a point of interest for historians, geologists, devotees and travellers who are fascinated by its legends and its setting (in forested hills).
