The Imps' story began in 1973. Frank Soda caught the attention of a band named Thor who were known for their incredible stage antics. At the time, Thor needed a band to tour and record with in Toronto, so Frank teamed up with drummer John Lechesseur and bassist Charles Towers, and travelled via train from Vancouver to Toronto. Frank named this 3-piece band The Imps for their diminutive size.

Fast-forward to the mid-70s. The Imps were starting to gain a cult following, and Frank Soda began writing his own songs. Soon, the song "TV People" became a Toronto club anthem, and his band became known for wild stage antics such as exploding televisions, “Moon Men”, smoking pigs, and a camera on Frank’s head photographing the audience (memorably repeated by Peter Gabriel on his Up tour).

In 1979, the Imps were voted the best Canadian bar band. They were discovered by Toronto’s legendary 104.5 CHUM-FM–and live In the Tube was their first album.

After touring Canada, the Imps returned to their native Toronto and manager Robert Connoly signed them a recording deal with Quality Records. In 1980, they released their first album for Quality: "Soda Pop". The album is notorious for not capturing the energy their live shows, but it did give them exposure – they ended up opening for Triumph, Max Webster, Powder Blues, Goddo, Savoy Brown, Ian Hunter, and Deep Purple.
