Last part of a six-part tour through Scotland with well-known places and insider tips that are not so well known but definitely worth seeing.
Edinburgh
is the capital city of Scotland, a major cultural and financial center, known for its historic castle, universities, and annual festivals. In English, the name is pronounced "ED-in-bur-uh" with the stress on the first syllable. The city's name is thought to derive from "Edwin's fort," with "burgh" meaning "fortress".
St. Giles' Cathedral
also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is Scotland's historic principal church and is located on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town. It has served as a focal point for major events in Scottish history for 900 years, including the Scottish Reformation led by John Knox. The current building began in the 14th century and is an active Presbyterian church with a rich history and stunning architecture.
Royal Museum
can refer to the Royal Museums Greenwich in London, a complex that includes several institutions such as the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, and the historic sailing ship Cutty Sark. Alternatively, it can also refer to the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, a museum of science, technology, and art that is part of the National Museums of Scotland.
Craigmillar Castle
is a ruined medieval castle in Edinburgh, Scotland, known for being a retreat from the city and for its association with Mary, Queen of Scots. It was originally built as a tower house in the late 14th century, and over time, it was expanded into a complex with a courtyard, walls, and gardens.
Palace of Holyroodhouse
also known as Holyrood Palace, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, at the opposite end to Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood has served as the principal royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century, and is a setting for state occasions and official entertaining.
Edinburgh Castle
is a historic fortress in Scotland, perched atop an extinct volcano, and it's one of the nation's most iconic landmarks. It has served as a royal residence, military stronghold, and prison, playing a central role in defining Scotland's history. Today, it is a major tourist attraction that houses national treasures like the Honours of Scotland (the Crown Jewels) and is a key part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh UNESCO World Heritage Site.
