Sandusky, Ohio, was originally settled as Portland Township in 1816 before being renamed Sandusky City in 1817 and officially platted in 1818. It was incorporated as a city in 1824. Cedar Point is an amusement park located in Sandusky, Ohio, USA. It initially opened intermittently 1870, and has been in continuous seasonal operation since 1882 (although 1897 was generally attributed to be the first operating-season of the resort within its present boundaries), and is considered to be the second oldest amusement park in North America after Lake Compounce. Cedar Point is the flagship park for Cedar Fair and, along with Valleyfair, was one of the original parks owned and operated by the company. This is one of two Cedar Fair parks in Ohio, with the other one being Kings Island.

In 1988, the park opened a water park, Soak City. It has since been rebranded Cedar Point Shores.

Johnson's Island is a 300-acre (120 ha) island in Sandusky Bay, located on the coast of Lake Erie, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the city of Sandusky, Ohio. It was the site of a prisoner-of-war camp for Confederate officers captured during the American Civil War. Initially, Johnson's Island was the only Union prison camp exclusively for Confederate officers but eventually it held privates, political prisoners, persons sentenced to court martial and spies. Civilians who were arrested as guerrillas, or bushwhackers, were also imprisoned on the island. During its three years of operation, more than 15,000 men were incarcerated there. The island was named after L. B. Johnson, the owner of the island beginning about 1852. It was initially named 'Bull's Island' by its first owner, Epaphras W.
