David Lazar is a travel and culture photographer who shows the rest of stay-at-home humanity the wonders of our world. He makes intriguing portraits, reminiscent of the well-known Jimmy Nelson, that capture indigenous people in their daily lives. Listening to David’s stories, we at IntoConnection were surprised to learn that his amazing and seemingly natural photography, was set up. However, it does not make any lesser of a photo and it must be said: we are impressed.

David takes IntoConnection into his world of photography by walking us through three of his favorite photographs and the stories behind them.

Burmese Fishermen
The magic of photoshop
The fisherman of Inle Lake in Myanmar have a very characteristic way of fishing: they controle their boat by standing on one leg, while the other is wrapped around an oar which steers the boat. David decided to put some effort in documenting this. He travelled to Inle, and with advice and help of a local photographer he met up with three fishermen. He paid them for their time and with sign language (and a bit of assistance of a local hotel staff member) David managed to position the fishermen in a lined up setting. Balancing himself in a shaky boat, David shot the picture he talks about in the interview.

One Day a Masai Warrior

With a series of intimate photographs of the Masai tribe envisioned in his mind, David travelled to the Masai Mara in Kenya.

He met up with a English speaking Masai guide, Julius, who took him to a local chief. Julius assisted as an interpreter, and helpt David explain his intentions: he needed eight Masai models to drive around in his safari bus and search for beautiful backgrounds to shoot.

Eventually the chief agreed and even offered himself as a model (unfortunately the man had lost an arm in a battle with a lion, resulting in David kindly refusing). David also asked for two women. The chief decided to line-up the village ladies, so the photographer could have an easy pick. Feeling quite awkward, David quickly asked two nearby Masai women to join the photo expedition.

With the safari jeep full of Masai models, including the guide Julius who had a long and slender Masai warrior figure, they left in search for the ultimate setting. The result is the amazing photograph David talks about in the interview.

Boy with Green Eyes
This photo was taken in Brazilian jungle. David was taken to a small Brazilian village by a guide, where the local population, usually dressed in modern clothing, was enjoying a traditional festival. For the occasion the people dressed in indigenous clothing. This boy has the most intriguing green eyes, which are even more accentuated by the green face paint. David positioned the boy between the leaves to emphasize this even further.
