A 37-year-old Indian-origin man was shot dead in a targeted attack at a busy shopping centre in Toronto, Canada, sending shockwaves through the Indian diaspora.

Toronto Police have identified the victim as Chandan Kumar Raja Nandakumar, an Indian-Canadian IT professional from Brampton, originally from Karnataka. The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon at the Woodbine Shopping Centre, a crowded commercial area at the intersection of Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 27.

Police said Nandakumar sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he later died. The suspect or suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. Investigators believe the attack was targeted and not random.

This incident marks Toronto’s third homicide of the year. Police are reviewing CCTV footage, canvassing the area for witnesses, and continuing efforts to identify those responsible.
