Baroness Helena Kennedy, KC is one of the UK’s most distinguished lawyers and a champion of human rights and civil liberties. She is the Director of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, and co-chair – with Sir Iain Duncan Smith MP – of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC). She has served as Chair of the British Council, Principal of Mansfield College, Oxford, Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, President of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London and is currently Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University. She is the Chair of Justice – the UK section of the International Commission of Jurists – and Patron, President or board member of numerous other charitable, educational and legal bodies. Appointed to the House of Lords in 1997 as a Labour Party member, she is one of seven UK Parliamentarians sanctioned by China and is a passionate friend and defender of Hong Kong.

In this interview, she discusses with Hong Kong Watch’s co-founder and Chief Executive Benedict Rogers the state of the legal system in Hong Kong, the erosion of the rule of law and judicial independence, the role of foreign judges sitting in Hong Kong, Beijing’s interpretation of the National Security Law, the case of Jimmy Lai and the future for Hong Kong lawyers.
