STORYLINE:

Rescuers continued to search early on Friday for survivors of a powerful earthquake that killed nearly a hundred people in Turkey's impoverished east.

Emergency crews have been hunting under huge slabs of concrete and through tangled steel for dozens of children trapped in the rubble of a demolished school dormitory.

Workers trying to pry free the students said they heard screams from under the debris.

Of the 198 students in the school, 116 had been saved by sunrise on Friday, while the bodies of 37 children and a teacher were recovered, according to local officials.

Another 45 children were still unaccounted for, and terrified parents prayed and wailed through Thursday night as they waited for news.

Relatives rushed toward soldiers every time a rescued child was carried out on a stretcher to check if their son or daughter had been saved.

Students, aged 7 to 16, were inside the co-educational primary and middle boarding school in the small town of Celtiksuyu when the 6.4-magnitude quake hit at 3:27 a.m. (0027 GMT) Thursday.

The epicentre was just outside the nearby city of Bingol, 700 kilometres (430 miles) east of Ankara.

More than 200 aftershocks hit the region after the initial 17-second temblor.

The quake and the ensuing destruction again focused attention on poor construction methods which have been blamed for heavy death tolls in previous quakes in Turkey.

Much of the country sits on top on the active North Anatolian fault and tremors are frequent. A quake in Bingol in 1971 killed 900 people.
