Piazza del Campo is the heart of Siena and one of the most iconic medieval squares in Europe. Designed in a unique shell shape with nine distinctive segments, it showcases remarkable beauty and architectural harmony. This layout symbolizes the rule of the Council of Nine, the group of magistrates who governed Siena from 1292 to 1355 during its golden age as a prosperous, self-governing city-state.

The square is framed by two of Siena’s most important landmarks:
Palazzo Pubblico, the historic town hall built in the Gothic style;
Torre del Mangia, its striking clock tower offering panoramic views of the city.

Opposite the tower stands the Fonte Gaia, a monumental fountain adorned with marble panels depicting scenes from the Book of Genesis and surrounded by graceful statues.

Dating back to 1169, when it was first known as Campus Sancti Pauli, the square began as a market and gathering place. It was formally paved in 1349, marking Siena’s rising influence and civic pride. Just a year earlier, Siena was struck by the Black Death, a devastating pandemic that swept through Europe and Asia, killing millions. Caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and spread primarily by fleas on rats, it led to severe population loss and widespread social disruption. Siena lost a significant portion of its citizens. In the aftermath, the Chapel of the Virgin was built at the base of Palazzo Pubblico as a votive offering by the survivors, expressing their gratitude and hope after the end of the pandemic in 1351.

Since the Middle Ages, Piazza del Campo has hosted the famous Palio di Siena, a thrilling horse race held twice a year—on July 2nd and August 16th. This high-stakes event reflects the fierce historical rivalries between the city’s districts and remains a deeply rooted cultural tradition.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Piazza del Campo continues to captivate visitors with its timeless charm, drawing crowds not only for its history but also for modern cultural events, concerts, and festivals.
