The name Lalbagh Fort is associated with several centuries of important history. This Lalbagh Fort is like a living archive that stands before us as a witness to the past. Lalbagh Fort is a monument to the history, heritage and Mughal architecture of the capital, old Dhaka. Lalbagh Fort is located on the banks of the Buriganga River in the southwestern part of old Dhaka. Emperor Arang planned to build the Lalbagh Fort, but his son Prince Shahzada Azam started the construction of the Lalbagh Fort in 1678. Initially, this fort was named Arangabad. Later, in 1684, after the death of Subedar Shaista Khan's daughter Paribi, he stopped the construction of the fort.
If you move forward along the entrance, you will see the tomb of Shaista Khan's daughter Paribi in front of you. The tomb is made of square marble stone. This tomb is decorated with unique craftsmanship, there is a dome covered with copper feet on top of the tomb. There are a total of three tunnels in Lalbagh Fort. It is said that once someone enters this tunnel, no one returns. That is why the tunnels of this Lalbagh Fort have been closed. Red bricks, marble stone and kasti stone were used in the construction of Lalbagh Fort. In 1844, the name of the Aurangabad area was changed to Lalbagh. With the change in the name of the area, the name of the Aurangabad Fort was also changed and became known as Lalbagh Fort. Lalbagh Fort has a total of three gates.
There are two more gates outside the main gate or entrance gate, the gate at the end of the fort was destroyed by the Pakistani invaders with cannon fire during the 1971 Liberation War. Currently, the residence or durbar hall of Subedar Shaista Khan is being used as the Lalbagh Fort Museum. Every day, various domestic and foreign tourists from far and wide come to this Lalbagh Fort. Lalbakella is closed for the whole day on Sunday and half a day on Monday. Moreover, Lalbagh Fort is closed on various government days. The entry fee for domestic tourists is 20 taka and for foreign tourists it is 200 taka. However, the ticket price for citizens of SAARC countries is 100 taka. For entertainment in the busy and mechanical city, you can visit this Lalbagh Fort, which is a symbol of Mughal architecture, style, and culture.
