Hi, my name is Ted Bendixson. In 2023, I was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation. Kind of grew up in Colorado, went to school there, and then became a snowboard bum afterwards. I went to the doctor, got a checkup, and he put a stethoscope up to me, and he's like, "Hey, did you know that you've got this heart murmur?” He sent me off to get an echocardiogram and had my first appointment with a cardiologist. "You've got this problem. You've got mitral valve regurgitation. Here's the deal. There's going to be this surgery at some point in your future, and if you don't get this surgery, your life is in danger.” I'd say emotionally it was more like a shock. It was just kind of out of the blue. I wasn't really ready for it. He said, “Yeah, we might be able to wait a year or so, but why do that? Get this done right away." That’s when he referred me to UVA. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find out that the procedure itself is minimally invasive. So all of that really did put me at ease quite a bit more. It made me feel like, "Okay, I'm going to definitely be going through something, but it's not going to be quite as serious as I might have thought.” First woke up from surgery, I was still intubated. I think my eyes were closed. The doctor came in, said that it was repaired. That was great to hear. So after three months, I really didn't feel like the heart valve was an impediment at all. When I was out snowboarding again, I felt just a lot more appreciative of it. Actually, within a few runs, I was just hitting jumps and I was doing some of the old tricks that I used to do. It just was kind of a little bit surreal that I could just do that. I'm right back to mountain biking, right back to my head-cracking lifestyle. So all was good.
