Seattle-area plastic surgeon Dr. Javad Sajan said he has been threatened after an online campaign accused him of operating on dozens of kids.
Sajan built a practice and a huge social media following with tens of thousands of followers, and a website that highlights multiple documentaries about his patients, some of which have gone through transition.
“I’m helping people live in a better state. I’m helping them be happy, and I’m contributing to their life without hurting them,” Sajan said in an interview with KOMO News.
But one of his posts in November seems to have sparked headline-making attention. In the video, Sajan can be seen looking into the camera, putting on scrubs, and walking into an operation room with the caption, “Doing all my TRANS surgeries before Trump tries to stop me.”
Now, an advocacy group called “Do No Harm” has launched a digital campaign with a 60-second spot that says, in part, “Child sex change surgeries are dangerous, destructive and irreversible, so why is one doctor on a mission to conduct as many of these horrific procedures as possible?”
The ad’s voiceover claims Sajan has operated on 120 kids, “some as young as 7 years old.” The ad continues, “This is not care. It’s immoral.”
Sajan said his family and office members have been harassed and threatened as a result of what he calls false claims.
“They say things that aren't even remotely close to the truth,” Sajan told KOMO News. “These people are saying I've operated on a 7-year-old. I've never done surgery on that. The numbers they're saying are far from realistic. When the patients come to us, we don't just do surgery on them. They have to go through a process, and the number is very, very small. I think they've singled me out just because I have a presence on social media.”
When asked how many gender confirmation surgeries he’s performed on minors, he replied, “Not that many. From what I could recall, I would guess about a dozen or less, something like that.”
“I have zero regrets about advocating for the community that I have the privilege to serve. I have zero regrets about posting that I'm going to be there for patients. I have zero regrets about being an advocate for people who are underserved and underprivileged, and for that, I have zero regrets, and I've done that, and we're going to keep doing that, as long as we are allowed to,” Sajan said.
