1 of 5. Late afternoon at arguably the best passenger train-watching spot in the country: Harrison, NJ, just across the Passaic River from Newark Penn Station. Shot from the westbound PATH platform.

Summer 2001 shows an Amtrak in transition: new Acela Express trainsets and HHP-8 locos are on the property, and so are the older E60s. The workhorse AEM-7s and Amfleets abound in three different paint schemes.

Most of the action here is New Jersey Transit commuter trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, and Raritan Valley lines (with a few other surprises). This was a few years before the ALP-46s and Comet Vs began arriving; you'll see mostly solid sets of Comet IIs (and their frequent tag-alongs, the Arrow I-rebuild IBs), IIIs and IVs hauled by ALP-44 electrics and F40PH-2CAT diesels, along with a healthy dose of Arrow III MUs.
