Merseyside Police has issued CCTV footage of a man officers believe may have vital information following an incident in which a purse containing a quantity of cash was stolen from a woman’s hand as she walked on a pavement in Birkenhead.
The 77-year-old was walking near the junction of Fairfax Road and Seymour Street on Saturday, 7 February 2015 at around 9.55am when she was approached by an offender who took her purse following a struggle. He then made off with the purse.
The victim was extremely shaken by the incident, which was reported to police soon after by a family member.
Enquiries into the incident were immediately started. CCTV from the surrounding area has been located and reviewed and an investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.
Detectives are appealing for the male in the CCTV footage, or anyone who recognises him, to come forward.
Detective Inspector Paul Parry said: "This was a very frightening ordeal for the woman, which left her very distressed and upset.

"Thankfully incidents such as this are rare. We are proud of Wirral's reputation as a very safe place for residents and I want to take this opportunity to reassure people that we are doing everything we can to bring the person responsible for this to justice.

"As part of enquiries, we have issued this CCTV footage of a man we believe may have important information which could help us with our investigation.

"I would appeal to him, or anyone who recognises him, to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
