Capt. Tony Argue out at Falcon Field (Mesa AZ) contacted
me because they wanted to honor my friend WWII Vet, Col. William Hunter,
on October 9, 2022. Col. William Hunter was trained in the North American
P-51 at Luke Air Force base, and then shipped off to fight in Korea.

Once there, Col. Hunter told us that he was told that the P-51 was obsolete,
and he and his fighter group were then trained on the Air Forces first operational jet..the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star.

It was a straight-winged jet fighter developed and produced by the American
company Lockheed. Introduced in 1945, it was the first jet fighter operated
by the United States Army Air Forces. The aircraft was built from 1945 until
1950 with a total number of 1,715 units produced and was retired with the United States in 1959.

Col. Hunter flew 100 missions in Korea and is now 96 years old . He is retired as one of our Hometown Heroes in Arizona!
