To provide context for the Salem Witch Trials, we look into the age of witch-hunting in Europe, from its origins through its conclusion. Why were tens of thousands accused of witchcraft between 1400 and 1750?  We present the broader historical context of witch trials outside Salem, trace its origins from ancient fears of harmful magic, through medieval skepticism, leading to the 15th-century transformation that framed witches as existential threats to Christendom. The episode covers important milestones such as the persecutions in the Canton of Valais in the 1420s and 1430s and the impact of Heinrich Kramer's Malleus Maleficarum in 1486. Statistics on the number of trials and executions are discussed, highlighting regional variations and the influence of centralized vs. local justice systems. The episode concludes by noting the decline of witch trials by the mid-18th century due to changing institutional and intellectual landscapes.
