​John 12:12 describes the beginning of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event that took place the day after a dinner in Bethany, which was likely Saturday evening. This would place the entry on Sunday, commonly referred to as Palm Sunday. A large crowd, gathered for the Passover festival, heard that Jesus was approaching the city. They went out to meet Him, carrying palm branches and shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” ​

The crowd’s actions were steeped in messianic expectation. Waving palm branches and proclaiming “Hosanna” (meaning “save now”) were traditional expressions of hope for deliverance, often associated with the arrival of a victorious king. By greeting Jesus in this manner, the people were acknowledging Him as the anticipated Messiah and King of Israel. ​

However, Jesus’ choice to enter Jerusalem on a young donkey, as noted in the following verses, signified a different kind of kingship—one characterized by humility and peace, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. This contrast between the crowd’s expectations and Jesus’ actual mission highlights the theme of misunderstanding that runs throughout the Gospel of John. Even His disciples did not fully grasp the significance of these events until after His glorification. ​

In summary, John 12:12 sets the stage for a pivotal moment in Jesus’ ministry, where public acclaim and deep misunderstanding converge, leading to the events of His passion and crucifixion.
