How to Correctly Determine the Design Storm in MSMA? Which storm guideline has the best storm data? Answer: HP1, HP26.
Reasons: 1. More up-to-date Data: Up to 20 years of additional storm data, more stations, 10/20 km grids.2. Other Considerations: Better temporal patterns, CCF (Climate Change Factor), ARF (Areal Reduction Factor).
Choice of Storm Data affects:Computed Peak Discharge (for sizing of drainage structures like bridges, culverts and On-Site Detention Basin)Computed Hydrographs (for design of detention basin)If design storm is wrong, so will the computed peak discharge and hydrographs, and the resulting drainage structure sized.
Why HP1 (2021) is lower than MSMA (2011) in the Case Study: Storm IDF data is a random process.Some values higher due to climate change i.e., global warming.But some (like in this case) may be lower due to longer period of record which gives more accurate prediction of design storms.Thus, it proved the importance of computing using all available guidelines and compare the values before adoption.

You will learn from scratch via a real case study how to optimize your design of On-Site Detention (OSD) using PC and spreadsheet templates to meet the requirements of Approving Authorities.
Day 1: Introduction to MSMA. Concept of major/minor storms. Design storm ARI’s. Changes between the first and second editions of MSMA in terms of key design parameters including: storm intensities, temporal patterns, design peak discharges, and storage volumes of OSD, detention basins and sediment basins.
Day 2: Hands-on training on how to perform basic hydrological computations using Excel spreadsheets. Three basic computations involving rainfall and runoff in MSMA are covered: (1) Design storm IDF (Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curves and temporal patterns, (2) Design peak discharges via the Rational Method and (3) Design hydrograph via the Time-Area Method. Participants will learn through step-by-step worked examples.
