Check out how the the robotic hand adapts to the changing mass of the object & tightens its grip. Initially the hand has adapted itself to the empty cup then tightens its grip as the liquid fills up the cup increasing its mass.This system has been developed by Nick Wettels, Avinash Parnandi and Ji Hyun Moon (grad students) at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles,CA. The system uses tactile sensor, mounted on the thumb, to sense the object and then computes the ratio of tangential force to normal force which is (in a way) proportional to its mass and thus adjusts its grip.
