Hans-Joachim Kiderlen is the Lutheran bishop of Georgia, a small eastern European country on the border of Asia and Europe. Kiderlen was born in 1943, in the German port-city of Hamburg. After studying law and history he entered the German diplomatic service, but went back to university in his forties to study theology. After working as a pastor in Germany for several years he was appointed permanent representative of the Lutheran Church at the EU, and then in 2009, bishop of the Lutheran Church in Georgia. The community there is small -- it has just 2000 members -- and is widely scattered. Most parishioners are poor, and one of the bishop's duties is to collect donations and contributions to help the needy and aged. For more go to
