The bittern is a large heron with beautiful, pale buffy-brown plumage with dark streaks and bars all around. It flies with wings that are large, rounded, and bent. A solitary bird that wanders softly through reeds at the water's edge in search of fish. In the spring, the males emit a spectacular far-carrying, booming sound. Its limited, reed bed-dependent population qualifies it for the Amber List. It is also listed as a Schedule 1 species.
