A person who has experienced his unity with the Supreme Truth is called a saint. Although a saint lives amongst us, he operates from a totally different state that we, being in our present condition, are unable to imagine. Such a person is unaffected by all pairs of opposites - happiness and sorrow, pleasure and pain, and accolades and insults. Such a person while living is liberated from life. When he dies, there is no rebirth for him because he is free from ignorance - which is the cause of rebirth.

A renunciate from the North went and started living in a village of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. He picked up only one word in the Tamil language – 'parvailla', with which he would respond to all. He came to be known as 'Parvailla Swami'. Parvailla Swami was once disgraced and beaten, when an unmarried young girl of the village said 'Parvailla' (meaning 'it does not matter' in Tamil) in reply to the name of the father of the child in her womb. The subsequent happenings in Parvailla Swami's life are shared in the episode. Do not miss!

ey Insights from Upanishad Ganga - Episode 51 (Liberation / मुक्ति क्या है):

Liberation (Mukti): Liberation, as depicted in the Upanishads, transcends life and death. A person who is liberated (जीवन मुक्त) is free from the bondages of the world, even while living. Such a person views everything as Brahman (Supreme Reality), neither fixating on right or wrong, nor experiencing guilt or attachment to worldly outcomes.

Story of the Sage (Swami Parvaila): The episode revolves around a wandering sage who speaks only one word, "Parvaila" (meaning "It doesn't matter"). Despite misunderstandings and the perception that he is a "thug" or fraud, the sage remains unaffected by the world’s accusations, embodying the state of spiritual liberation.

Symbolism of the Sage: The sage’s repeated use of "Parvaila" signifies his complete detachment from duality, success, failure, accusations, or praise. He lives in a state of equanimity, undisturbed by the world’s temporary and ever-changing nature. This aligns with the Upanishadic view that true liberation is the realization that everything in the world is transient and illusory.

Village's Response: The villagers first see the sage as a wise man and then accuse him of a crime, only to later discover his innocence. This illustrates how people’s perceptions are fickle and rooted in ignorance, often fluctuating between praise and condemnation based on temporary emotions and circumstances.

Lesson on Detachment: The sage's indifference to the world teaches the profound lesson of spiritual detachment (वैराग्य), where one remains unshaken by worldly judgments, knowing that ultimate truth lies beyond the superficial layers of life.

Truth and Maya (Illusion): The villagers are caught in the illusion (माया) of the world, mistaking the transient for the eternal. The sage represents the one who has transcended this illusion and remains steadfast in the face of worldly challenges.

Moral of the Episode: The episode emphasizes the essence of spiritual liberation—freedom from worldly attachments and judgments. True liberation is realizing the impermanence of the world and rising above the dualities of success and failure, praise and blame. Through the character of the sage, we learn that spiritual wisdom lies in equanimity, self-realization, and detachment from the illusions of the material world.
