Jonah’s story begins similarly to the other weird prophets… God tells Jonah to do something he doesn’t want to do… something that will cause him to look crazy… “Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, because their wickedness has come up before Me.”

But unlike the prophets we talked about two weeks ago, Jonah was NOT obedient to what God told him to do. He ran the other way, got on a ship and sailed in the opposite direction. But God pursued him. The Bible says that “the LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea, so that the ship was about to break up.” Jonah 1:4

Jonah told the sailers to throw him out into the sea to save themselves. They didn’t want to at first, but finally they did… and you know the story. The Bible says that “the LORD designated a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.” While he was in there, he repented for his disobedience and “the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.” (Jonah 2:10)

And then he finally went to Nineveh and did what God had told him to do in the first place. And it actually worked! This is one of the rare occasions when the people actually did listen to what the prophet said!!! The king and the ENTIRE city turned to God and these weren’t even Israelites!!! So God relented and did NOT destroy them. So in a sense, Jonah was one of the most successful prophets in all the Old Testament!

But, he still had pridefulness that needed to be purged out of his life. He actually became angry that the Ninevites had listened to him!

“Please LORD, was this not what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore in anticipation of this I fled to Tarshish, since I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy, and One who relents of disaster. 3 So now, LORD, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.” 4 But the LORD said, “Do you have a good reason to be angry?” Jonah 4:2-4

Then he goes and sits outside the city, pouting. God makes a plant grow to shelter him from the sun and Jonah was very thankful about the plant. But the next day God sends a worm to kill the plant and it withers away. And once again Job is mad at God and begs to die (Job was really an emotional wreck!!!) But God rebukes Jonah and asks why shouldn’t He have compassion on the more than 120,000 Ninevites who have actually repented…

The story ends there but I hope Jonah finally learned his lesson! God continued to let Jonah go through these humiliating circumstances to teach him truth and obedience. And we learn from his story that if God tells you to do something you don’t want to do, it’s best to go ahead and do it anyway or He might let something even more humiliating happen to you!
