Heading northeast out of the coastal, city of Cartagena, and towards the oldest city in Colombia, Santa Marta, circa 1525, we came across an active mud volcano. The Volcan Del Totumo. We found a spot to park our car, and tipped the helpful youngster a few thousand pesos. As we approached this natural wonder we watched in amazement, at what appeared to be a voluntary, ritual of human sacrifice. Scores of people, of all ages, where stripped down and headed up a long flight of rickety stairs, that looked more like a ladder, to take a plop in the slightly more than warm mud. As we circled around the base of the volcano for a better look, we saw the same people we watched go up, come down on the other side. Aha! These people weren't crazy after all. A short flight from the volcano, and south, towards the interior of the country, is the capitol city of Bogotá, and more adventure. After a few days of rest and some business, we took the Tren de la Sabana to Zipaquira and the Catedral de Sal. We were serenaded by some of the local talent, all the way. In Cajica we were entertained by clowns on unicycles before a typically, wonderful lunch and the return trip to Bogotá. Back in Bogotá we took another rest day before we attacked Monserrate by tram and the Jardin Botánico by taxi. This is a wonderful country with lots of natural beauty. Not the least of which are the Colombian people.
