J. S. Bach, Courante in D minor from French Suite no. 1

A dance with a broad rhythm and steady breath, moving with the imperfection of life itself. On the score, the time signature is three half notes, a pulse that curiously resembles the ancient metrical foot called “trochee,” made up of one long syllable followed by a short one—here, the long corresponds to the first two half notes, and the short to a kind of upbeat that falls into the new measure. Even before reading “3/2,” it is above all the very writing of the bar that reveals this motion in its musical sense.
On the wave of this “limping” time, like that of certain pendulum clocks recorded with an unequal oscillation, unfolds the weaving of a polyphony in which the voice of a soprano, with its melancholy eloquence, stands out.
Among modulations, progressions, and dissonances that make the texture dense and intricate, once again Johann Sebastian Bach has turned geometry into the space that welcomes the movements and yearnings of the soul.

Danza dal ritmo ampio, dal respiro regolare che si muove con l’imperfezione della vita stessa. Sulla partitura l’indicazione di tempo è tre metà, una scansione che ha singolarmente qualcosa in comune con l’antico piede metrico detto “trocheo”, composto da una sillaba lunga e una breve, dove la lunga in questo caso è costituita dalle prime due metà e la breve da una sorta di “levare” che ricade sulla nuova battuta. Prima ancora di leggere “3/2”, è soprattutto la scrittura stessa della battuta a chiarire questo andamento nel suo senso musicale..
Sull’onda di questo tempo “zoppo”, come quello di alcuni orologi a pendolo registrati con una oscillazione ineguale, si snoda il delinearsi di una polifonia in cui spicca il canto di un soprano dall’eloquio malinconico.
Tra modulazioni, progressioni, dissonanze che rendono la tessitura fitta e articolata, anche stavolta Johan Sebastian Bach ha fatto della geometria lo spazio che accoglie i moti e gli struggimenti dell’anima.
