Part rapid-fire rapper, part confessional singer/songwriter, and part traditional folk storyteller, Ren makes music that can dart between genres as quickly as it switches from insular to fantastical to universally relatable. Chronic health issues and mental health struggles became a big part of Ren's life early on, and these became regular themes in his songs. His viral 2022 single "Hi Ren" offered a perfect showcase of his unique patchwork of styles, and after hooking new listeners with that arresting track, he continued expanding in new directions on 2023 album Sick Boi.

Ren Gill was born in Wales in 1990 and moved to Bath in his late teens to study music at Bath Spa University. He played in various bands, but it was his solo street busking that led to seasoned musician Eric Appapoulay discovering him. Ren secured a contract with Sony in 2010 and went to London with Appapoulay to work on music, but became increasingly ill while there and had to move back to Wales. Ren spent the next several years dealing with health issues, often too weak to leave his bed, where he spent his days writing and recording music. In 2016, he self-released his debut album Freckled Angels.

Ren shared new music regularly after the release of the album, including video uploads on his YouTube channel, various singles, his narrative 2019 EP The Tale of Jenny & Screech, and several mixtape style projects of demo recordings in 2020. He broke through in December of 2022 with the release of his epic, autobiographical single "Hi Ren." The dark tones of the song's video matched its lyrical themes of internal struggles, and the video was viewed millions of times within its first weeks of release. "Hi Ren" introduced many new listeners to Ren's divergent songwriting styles, and he spent 2023 gaining popularity while he released new songs. In October of 2023, he released his second album Sick Boi. It had been preceded by several well-performing tracks and it hit the number one spot on the U.K. and Scottish album charts while cracking the Billboard 200 in the States. ~ TiVo Staff
