My first piece of advice is to think aloud. Describe and explain what you’re doing. A common mistake is interviewees work through the coding problem silently without sharing any info with the interviewer.

The interviewer is there to learn about your thought process and how you approach solving new problems. It is best to involve them in the process by communicating your thought process.
The interviewer wants to understand how you approach solving a new problem. In your career, you will be solving complex and critical problems. Interviewers want to get an insight on how you engage in such a process. You want to sound organized and methodical.

My next piece of advice is don’t jump into writing code. You don’t want to rush your solution.
Graduates will often come up with the solution while writing code. This results in errors and a poor interview experience.

The best approach is to understand the problem and define the requirements. Clarify any ambiguity with the interviewer about the coding problem. Sometimes Interviewers introduce ambiguity in the problem to see if you need notice them.

Design your solution using simple pseudocode and test the solution manually. Walk the interviewer through your solution and get some feedback. Implement the solution. Review code, and manage your time.

Next, you should pick the language you are most comfortable with. You need to choose the language you are most comfortable with and showcase your clear understanding of the chosen language. Don’t worry too much about small syntax errors.

My last piece of advice is to remember the importance of soft skills. Be polite with the interviewers and respect their time and efforts. Arrive on time and respect the interview length assigned by the interviewer.

The goal of coding interviews is to test your skills on problem solving using code. Use a simple and concise way to communicate so the interviewers can keep up with the conversation and your thought process. Coding interviewers are very stressful, and it is important to remember to keep your cool. The human and soft side is the most important thing in any career.
