A force is a push or pull resulting from an object's interaction with another, and it can change a body's state of rest, motion, or its size and shape. When a force is applied to a body pivoted at a single point, it creates a turning effect known as the moment of force. This turning effect depends on both the magnitude of the force applied and the perpendicular distance from the pivot, which is why tools like spanners or door handles are designed to be used at a distance from the point of rotation to make turning easier.

Thrust is the total force acting normally, or perpendicularly, on a surface, while pressure is the measure of that thrust per unit area. There is an inverse relationship between pressure and area; for a constant force, the pressure increases as the surface area decreases. This scientific principle explains many daily observations, such as why sharp knives cut better than blunt ones and why wide foundations are used in buildings to reduce the pressure exerted on the ground.

Liquids and gases also exert pressure, but unlike solids, they exert it in all directions, including sideways and upwards. The pressure in a liquid increases with the depth and the density of the fluid, which is why the walls of a dam are constructed to be much thicker at the bottom. Additionally, we live under a layer of air called the atmosphere that exerts a significant amount of pressure on us, though we remain unaware of it because our internal blood pressure balances it out.
