Today on Jungleland 805, we’re taking an in-depth look at one of the most striking air plants you can grow outdoors — Tillandsia latifolia, a stem-forming (caulescent) giant that defies common expectations of air plants.

Native to rocky outcrops and sand dunes in Ecuador and Peru, this hardy species thrives in full sun, strong winds, and minimal water, making it one of the toughest and most versatile air plants for both collectors and tropical-style landscaping.

🔥 Why it's so fascinating:
Botanists recognize several varieties — latifolia var. latifolia, divaricata, major, and leucophylla — each shaped by its native habitat. Some evolved in fog-fed coastal lomas, others in dry, xeric regions. While collectors often treat them like separate species, DNA studies show they’re closely related and intergrade in the wild, which is why experts group them as one polymorphic species rather than splitting them apart.
