Our ambassador, Kali Fraser hails from the Santa Cruz area. Her connection to her heritage started with her dad teaching her at an early age that Fraser was not just their surname but also their ancestral clan and showing her their tartan. Much later in 2023, Kali’s interest really got fired up by a trip to Scotland.

She says, “I really fell in love with the country and also with highland wear. To me heritage means understanding the communities that I come from, engaging with their culture and customs, and taking pride in who I am.”

That journey has included learning Scottish songs and poetry, attending the local Highland Games, and taking classes in Scottish dancing and sword fighting. Most recently, Kali hosted her first Burns Night party, which allowed her to celebrate and share her heritage with family and friends. Not to mention enjoying some Scottish cuisine. And of course Kali is avidly adding to her highland wear collection.

Kali works in the field of science interpretation and is a passionate spokesperson for nature, the environment and history. Her love of the outdoors started at an early age. She recalls how after discovering the nature section of her elementary school library, she determined to spend her lunches reading every single book.

A personal challenge she conquered on the way was a speech impediment. It made communication hard and often resulted in people discounting her intelligence.

She says “I knew I had a lot to offer, but wasn't able to make that known until I found my voice. Because I know what it's like to be overlooked, I deeply recognize the importance of communication and making sure that others have a chance to be heard.”

After the Pandemic, Kail wanted to take her passion for the great outdoors and for education to a new level. So she left her tech job in the defense sector to pursue something more community-focused. And her energy seems unbridled. A certified California Naturalist, Kali does everything from leading interpretive tours to blacksmithing demos to running a science- and history-themed YouTube channel of her own.

Her biggest love is helping youth to explore the great outdoors and experience a bit of her own passion for the natural world. She’s taught summer camp courses, explained exhibits at the Seymour Center aquarium, and brought kids out on the water to learn marine science with the O'Neill Sea Odyssey.

She says, “One of my favorite things is to see people develop their own relationship with nature and through that care more about protecting our amazing planet.”

Kali is currently seeking higher learning and says she is excited for the ride. Wherever she goes next, you can be sure Kail will be opening doors for others. Because as she puts it, Science is for everyone.
