Waking the Witch is a one-act, immersive chamber opera in which the audience takes on the role of an accused witch during the 16th-Century witch panics, facing interrogation from a zealous witchfinder (countertenor). The libretto is adapted from the words of historical witch hunters as well as from modern-day rhetoric that is eerily similar. The treble instruments of the ensemble (flute, violin, clarinet) play Animal Familiars, possibly real, possibly hallucinatory shape-shifting demons. Forced to walk without sleeping until the "truth" is found, what will the accused do? Confess? Resist?
