In just one year, the Ministry of Steel has delivered historic reforms and transformative progress under the dynamic leadership of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

From reviving key steel plants like Salem, VISL Bhadravati, RINL and Nagarnar, to returning SAIL and other PSUs to profitability, the ministry has unlocked industrial growth, sustainability, and new opportunities for millions of Indians.

Key Highlights:

Historic Revival of RINL (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant): On January 16, 2025, the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, approved a ₹11,440 crore revival package for RINL through the tireless efforts of Shri Kumaraswamy. This ensures the revival of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, safeguards thousands of jobs, and reaffirms the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The plan targets restarting all three blast furnaces and achieving 7.3 MTPA production capacity by end-2025.

Mega Expansion Plan for Bokaro Steel Plant: During his visit to Bokaro, Jharkhand, Shri Kumaraswamy unveiled an ambitious ₹20,000 crore expansion project to boost the plant’s production capacity from 5.25 MTPA to 7.55 MTPA. The project will generate 2,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs, introduce a new 4500 cubic meter blast furnace, and prioritize decarbonization by reducing carbon emissions from 2.67 tonnes to below 2.2 tonnes per tonne of crude steel by 2030.

Strengthening Raw Material Security: As part of the Bokaro visit, Shri Kumaraswamy inspected the Tasra Coal Mine (3.5 MTPA domestic coking coal production from September 2025) and the Chasnalla Washery (2 MTPA coal washery to cut ash from 28% to 17%), key steps towards self-reliance in coal supply.

Launch of India’s first Green Steel Taxonomy for low-carbon steelmaking.

Expansion of the PLI Specialty Steel Scheme (1.1) to enhance domestic production, reduce imports, and create jobs.

Revival of iconic plants like Salem Steel, VISL Bhadravati, Nagarnar Steel Plant ensuring industrial resurgence and job protection.

Deployment of a 12 % safeguard duty on steel imports to protect India’s domestic industry.

Strengthened global presence through UAE trade initiatives for PSUs like SAIL, MECON & NMDC.

Renewed focus on innovation and sustainability through the National Metallurgists Awards and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
