Dr. Jon Hathaway describes how his strength in ICD coding unintentionally set the stage for a new direction in his career. Early on, he was generating more revenue than expected, which prompted his department chair to audit him three times. The issue was not fraud but simply that he was coding correctly and efficiently, even though he did not fully understand every nuance of the system at the time. After spending a year learning the rules in depth, he was asked to start teaching coding and billing. Eventually, the national office took notice and invited him to join the national coding committee. He devoted much of his free time to volunteering and educating others, and the experience taught him an important lesson: physicians need to understand the rules of coding to receive the full value of the work they provide.
