Pepper Travels to the far North to spend a weekend at Loon Lake Lodge.

Off the Gunflint Trail, overlooking Loon Lake, and on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, this relaxed, all-year resort is 36.8 miles from downtown Grand Marais.

Traditional log cabins come with shower rooms, kitchens and gas grills. Many have fireplaces and decks with lake views.

The lodge has free WiFi and a log-paneled restaurant serving local American fare for breakfast and dinner. Canoe and pontoon rentals are available.

The Puli is a small-medium breed of Hungarian herding and livestock guarding dog known for its long, corded coat. The tight curls of the coat appear similar to dreadlocks. A similar-looking, but much larger breed – also Hungarian – is the Komondor. The term used for a group of Puli is Pulik.
