U.S. President Donald Trump continued his journey to Switzerland after a minor technical issue forced an unscheduled aircraft change shortly after departure from Washington, U.S. officials confirmed late Tuesday.
According to the White House, the president’s initial aircraft—designated Air Force One—returned safely to Joint Base Andrews after flight crew detected what was described as a “minor electrical issue” soon after takeoff. The Boeing 747 landed without incident, and no safety concerns were reported.
Following the precautionary return, President Trump and accompanying staff transferred to a smaller Boeing 757, which departed just after midnight local time. The delay extended the transatlantic journey by more than two hours, but officials stressed that the president’s schedule would proceed as planned.
Trump is traveling to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, where global leaders, policymakers, and business executives are gathering to discuss economic stability, geopolitical risks, and emerging global challenges.
Incidents involving presidential aircraft are rare but not without precedent. Past administrations have faced similar disruptions, including weather-related aborted landings and bird strikes, all resolved without injury or lasting impact.
The White House emphasized that the decision to switch aircraft was made out of an abundance of caution, underscoring the stringent safety protocols that govern presidential travel. Despite the brief disruption, Trump’s participation in the Davos summit remains unaffected, with meetings and engagements expected to proceed on schedule.
