Labour has dropped its 2019 definition of Islamophobia over fears it could restrict free speech. The party will replace the term “Islamophobia” with “anti-Muslim hate” and remove all references to “Muslimness”.

Critics had warned the old definition, based on the APPG on British Muslims’ wording, was too broad and risked acting as a “blasphemy law”.

The new draft, reviewed by former Tory minister Dominic Grieve, aims to clearly define hatred toward Muslims while protecting freedom of expression.

Communities Secretary Steve Reed will make the final decision and has vowed not to “bring in blasphemy laws by the back door”.
