Climate change and rapid land-use changes are pushing the Amazon, the world's largest rainforest, to a point where recovery may be nearly impossible. Scientists have warned that if current trends continue, approximately 38 percent of the Amazon rainforest could be lost by the end of the century, a loss that has the potential to disrupt the entire Earth's climate system.
According to a new study led by researchers from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, climate change and land-use changes are pushing the Amazon towards an unprecedented crisis. The research estimates that a total of 38 percent of the forest could be lost, of which 25 percent will be due to land use changes for agriculture, livestock, and other human activities, while 13 percent will be due to rising global temperatures.
This figure is considered extremely serious because previous studies have warned that if 20 to 25 percent of the Amazon is lost, the rainforest could cross a tipping point, where its ecosystem will rapidly transform into open savannah-like land. Spanning approximately 5.5 million square kilometers, the Amazon is not just a dense forest of trees. It is the Earth's largest center of biodiversity and home to millions of indigenous peoples. According to scientists, the Amazon's trees and soil store approximately 10 percent of the Earth's total surface carbon. This is why it is often called the "lungs of the Earth."
This study, led by Selma Bultén, a geographer at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, systematically assesses for the first time how land use change and climate change are interacting to affect the Amazon. Researchers analyzed deforestation from 1950 to 2014 using Earth system models and projected future events based on two different climate scenarios. The results were published in the prestigious scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to the study, if global temperatures rise above 2.3 degrees Celsius, the risk of sudden and widespread deforestation in the Amazon will increase manifold.
