A monumental work by the early 12th century philosopher, poet, and composer Peter Abelard. He wrote 6 lamentations or Planctus but only the last exists in square mensural notation which allows a reasonable reconstruction of pitches and note duration (which still depends on the poetry to work out). Dolorum Solatium survives in 3 manuscripts in total and midway I show an example from Paris NAL 3126 but the rest is from Gb-Ob Bodleian 79 which is the clearest to read. The text describes biblical king David lamenting the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan. Translation excerpts from "Words and Music in the Middle Ages" by John Stevens.
