NASA’s Curiosity rover captured this tiny coral-shaped rock on the surface of Mars using its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI), just inches from the ground.

At first glance, it looks biological — like something from Earth’s ocean floor.

But it isn’t alive.

Billions of years ago, Mars was a very different planet. Liquid water once flowed across its surface. Minerals carried by that water seeped into cracks inside rock and hardened over time. After millions of years of wind erosion, the surrounding material wore away — leaving behind this intricate, coral-like formation.

Today, Mars is a cold desert.
But structures like this reveal a past shaped by water and minerals — changing how we understand the Red Planet.

This is not evidence of life.
It is evidence of ancient geological processes driven by water.
