Dongguan Keyuan is one of the representatives of Lingnan gardens. Together with Shunde Qinghui Garden, Panyu Yuyin Shanfang and Foshan Liangyuan, it is known as the "Four Great Lingnan Gardens" in the Qing Dynasty. This garden was built in the 30th year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1850). After years of baptism, it still exudes a unique charm.
Introduction to Keyuan
• Architectural style: Although Keyuan is small in area, only three mu and three (about 2204 square meters), it is exquisitely designed, perfectly blending residences, living rooms, villas, courtyards, flower gardens, and study rooms. Most of the buildings in the garden are made of wood, stone, and blue bricks, but they are very exquisite. Window carvings, railings, beauty backrests, and even floors have their own styles, reflecting the ingenuity of the ancients everywhere.
• Garden landscape: Pavilions, towers, mountains and rivers, bridges, halls, and courtyards are all available, with a staggered layout, interconnected everywhere, twists and turns, and confusing. The keynote is that there are scenes in empty places, sparse places are not empty, small places show big things, dense places are not crowded, quiet places are interesting, and quiet places are fragrant. Every blade of grass, every brick and every tile here carries a strong historical and cultural atmosphere, making people feel as if they have traveled back to the past.
• Cultural heritage: Zhang Jingxiu, the founder of Keyuan, gave up his pen to join the army and served as the acting governor of Jiangxi Province. He was proficient in calligraphy, painting, chess, and poetry. He invited many literati to gather, making Keyuan one of the cultural sources of modern Guangdong. Ju Chao and Ju Lian created the boneless method and the powder-collision method to paint flowers and birds in Keyuan for ten years, and taught them, which pioneered the Lingnan School of Painting. Today, Keyuan has become a national key cultural relic protection unit.
