With TV programmes like “Ru Paul’s Drag Race”, Drag’s exaggerated portrayal of femininity has gone mainstream. This video takes the specific case of drag queens who retain their beards as a launch pad for exploring the wider social significance of this visually striking contradiction.

The French media philosopher, Jean Baudrillard, is often misrepresented as the “high priest of postmodernism”. Instead I argue that, in works such as his book “Seduction” and “Simulacra & Simulations”, Baudrillard’s concepts can be used more critically. A close reading of Baudrillard’s work suggests that to bearded drag queens are a symptom of a society suffering from excessive simulation.

*I forgot to mention in the video* that the epigraph by Baudrillard (from his "Simulacra & Simulation) that claims to be from "Ecclesiastes" is a bogus/simulated quote that, appropriately enough, he made up!
