Russia bombards Ukraine with a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones in massive attack

Russia has bombarded in Ukraine with a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones in a massive overnight attack which has killed over 20 people — in a move said to “threaten” Donald Trump’s push for peace.

The Ukrainian air force said 598 drones and 31 missiles were launched in the attack on Thursday – the deadliest since the US President’s Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month and the second largest aerial attack since Russia launched its full scale invasion three years ago.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday it was now “obvious” that a hoped-for meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky would not happen.

Missiles and drones ripped through apartment blocks in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv during the assault and damaged the offices of the European Union and the British Council during the large-scale attack.

At least 21 people, including three children, were killed, with over 20 injured.
