1)Heart attack⤵️
Lack of sleep results in causing elevated blood pressure levels for longer periods. It causes an increase in bad cholesterol, which leads to the buildup of plaque in arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart. Moreover, it can also affect insulin sensitivity, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. It also makes the blood stickier, increasing the likelihood of clot formation. All these collectively affect cardiovascular health negatively and can cause a heart attack.
2)Cancer⤵️
Lack of sleep causes a weakened immune system, producing fewer natural killer cells, making it easier for abnormal cells to grow and develop into tumors. It also causes higher levels of oxidative stress, leading to DNA damage and cancer susceptibility. Melatonin is a hormone that can suppress the growth of cancer cells; however, due to lack of sleep, its levels are also suppressed.
Therefore, consistently getting a good amount of sleep every night is extremely important, and one should aim for a minimum of 7 hours per night as it has been proven to be the sweet spot.
