Transmesenteric hernia is a rare internal hernia where a portion of the intestine protrudes through a defect or opening in the mesentery, the membrane supporting the intestines within the abdomen. Causes can be congenital defects, acquired defects from previous abdominal surgery, trauma, or inflammatory conditions. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, constipation, and peritonitis in severe cases. Diagnosis is challenging due to the symptoms mimicking other abdominal conditions in some conditions. Diagnostic methods include a medical history and physical examination, imaging studies like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and small bowel follow-through. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications associated with transmesenteric hernias. The most useful imaging test for diagnosing transmesenteric hernias is the CT scan of the abdomen, which can show the herniated bowel and the mesenteric defect.

Transmesenteric hernias are a serious medical condition that requires surgery to correct and close the defect in the mesentery. Laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique, is often the preferred method for repairing these hernias. It involves making small incisions in the abdomen, inflating the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas, inserting a laparoscope, and inserting specialized instruments.
