A Journey towards 70% recovery factor
While we have no control on the Original Oil in Place (OOIP) other than finding it, the volume that we can economically recover, called the reserves, is partly in our control. Through proper well placement, engineering, and production technologies, we can recover anywhere from 5 to 70% of OOIP. Exactly how much we will recover depends on the techniques employed, our engineering skills, and the nature of the reservoir. In this session, we will talk about various oil field technologies and best practices that are being used worldwide to maximize petroleum reserves. We will try to answer a billion dollar question. What has made some fields achieve nearly 70% recovery factor while others are trailing behind, stuck at an average of 35%, some as low as 10%. We will also try to demystify Enhanced Oil Recovery, EOR. Despite all the hype, and many decades of research, EOR is contributing just about 4% of total world production, and most of it is from thermal EOR. We will briefly discuss some reasons of such dismal performance of EOR and explore the future of EOR. More importantly should we in Pakistan go for EOR? And if so using which technique.
