Warlord talks peace, makes pitch for international aid

Somali warlord General Mohamed Farah Aideed told a news conference
at his Mogadishu home on Sunday (5/3) that the war in Somalia is
over. He said opposing factions were united in their desire to
rebuild Somalia and added that he was ready to work with his
arch-rival, Ali Mahdi Mohammed. "Now the Somalis are united to
work together, to rebuild the country and to maintain peace and
security," Aideed said. "The war is over. In the north, we have
contacted our brothers there and we have told them to stop
fighting. At this stage, things are improving." Aideed claimed
Somalia wanted to work together with all countries and needs to
live in harmony with the international community. He spoke just
after the last UN peacekeeping forces were withdrawn from Somalia
in a military protection exercise that involved thousands of
American and Italian troops.
