▋Mountains to Sea Greenway
Mountains to Sea Greenway, the first long-distance foot path/ bikeway to be named “Greenway”, began its development in 2007. With Chao-Huang Temple as the center, the local nature-lovers started to connect the 45 km “Tainan Mountains to Sea Greenway”. In 2018, the official development for the “Mountains to Sea National Greenway”, based on the Tainan Mountains to Sea Greenway, finally began after years of community campaigns, and organization and plans by the Forestry Bureau.
The Mountains to Sea National Greenway starts from the Taijiang National Park, located at sea level, and passes by Wushantou Reservoir, over Wushantou Mountains to Zengwen Reservoir, along Zengwen River through Alishan, the Mt. Jade Trailhead at Tataka in Xinyi Township, and finally ends at Taiwan’s highest peak at 3952 meters above sea level on Mt. Jade. This is a National Greenway that connects the sea, the rivers and the mountains, carrying the history, the diverse ethnic cultures, and the natural beauty of Taiwan. The greenway mainly consists of roads and countryside paths, which is why various vehicles of green transportation are recommended for travelers. For instance, one can take the bamboo raft, the ferry, or the community shuttle bus, ride a bike, or go on foot. In the future, eco-tourism based on local features will be incorporated to open up historical and cultural trails, water resource heritage trails, and native land eco-trails, so that this will become a National Greenway that represent the Taiwanese lifestyle and cultural heritage.
● End points: Taijiang National Park, Mt. Jade
● Length: 170 km
● The Greenway spans across 5 climatic zones and forest physiognomic types, and 4 ethnic cultural circles. It connects Taijiang National Park and Mt. Jade National Park, Zengwen Reservoir and Wushantou Reservoir, two of Alishan’s National Scenic Areas, and the 3 cultural living circles of the Tsou, the Siraya, and Taijiang.
▋About Eco-Craft Trails
In addition to the efforts devoted to the Taiwan National Greenway, TMI Trail is dedicated to the campaign for eco-craft trails with the aim to maintain trails using environment-friendly methods. These principles include: 1. Conserve the ecosystem 2. Preserve the cultural heritage 3. Manage the environmental carrying capacity 4. Apply local materials 5. Conduct regular maintenance 6. Engage private-public collaboration.
TMI Trail's main missions include holding course series in Trailology, organizing Taiwan Trail Day and eco-craft trail working holidays, and assisting in eco-craft trail training courses. We hope to involve more in our cause to encourage wider appreciation of our forest trails, and to expand and reinforce the professionalism of our eco-craft trail volunteers. We want to connect more communities and tribes to join our trail maintenance efforts, and to influence the government towards the implementation of environment-friendly principles in the construction of trails.
The three National Greenways: Tamsui-Kavalan Historical and Cultural Trails, Raknus Selu Trail, and Mountains to Sea National Greenway, have preserved precious landscapes and histories of Taiwanese lifestyles. Many of the trails along these Greenways have been constructed and are being maintained using eco-craft trail methods. We welcome all to come and hike on these trails, during which we also encourage you to please take a moment and appreciate the beauty of the eco-craft trails.
