Zygmunt Noskowski (1846 -- 1909) was one of the leading figures in Polish music during the late 19th century and the first decade of the 20th.
As a boy he studied the violin with J. Hornziel, and from 1864 to 1867 attended the Warsaw Music Institute, studying harmony with Moniuszko. On receiving a scholarship from the Warsaw Music Society he travelled to Berlin, where he studied composition with F. Kiel and orchestration with R. Würst. He appeared as a singer and pianist, and was a critic for the Kurier Warszawski. In November 1875 the Warsaw Music Society arranged a concert of his compositions. He was director of the Bodan singing society in Konstanz (1876 -- 80), the Warsaw Music Society (1881 -- 1902), whose concerts he also conducted, the Warsaw Philharmonic (1905 -- 08) and the Opera (from 1907). An eminent teacher, he contributed much to the musical life of Warsaw and to the education of a generation of Polish composers, including Maszyński, Pankiewicz, Melcer, Rogowski, Wieniawski, Różycki and Szymanowski.
Noskowski attempted to use his powers in almost all areas of music practised in his time. In his compositions he followed the development of European music with interest, assimilating some of its achievements, though retaining certain conservatism. He wrote several hundred works, but only a few have endured. These include the concert overture Morskie Oko, the symphonic poem Step ('The steppe'), three symphonies, the symphonic variations Z życia narodu ('From the life of the nation'), and many piano miniatures and songs. He is considered one of the foremost representatives of the late 19th century symphonic music in Poland.
